Poison Beauty

I read a disturbing article today where a woman desperately wanted larger, um, hind parts. In order to achieve this ”look”, she was referred to a quack doctor to plump her up like a Ballpark Frank. Well, this cosmetic surgery of sorts resulted in the injectee having to go to the emergency room due to serious pain. On her third trip she finally fessed up to doctors that her issue was the result of being injected with cement, mineral oil, and flat-tire sealant! And do you know what the sad part is? This is the third story I’ve read in a week involving those products being injected into a woman’s body in order to achieve what some in society deem as good parts, I mean looks.

There are people who have what is called body dysmorphic disorder , which is a type of mental illness where they have an inordinate obsession with their appearance. This obsession is marked by harsh self-criticism and often results in depression due to chronic dissatisfaction with their bodies. Then there are those who do not have this disorder, but rather they have a societal disorder where they want to achieve a look that will either make people like them, or help them garner  higher wages in a line of work where private parts are a public commodity.

Some people mistakenly believe that good looks would grant them a better life by receiving more attention and being looked upon as the “It” person. However, most times that is what it’s all about; the “IT”. That “IT”  for some people is actually poison, not only in the sense that people are using the wrong materials  in their bodies, but also poison in that it has created this societal frenzy that roots itself in the superficial, then grows into something unrecognizable once it pushes through the ground. Society is so used to being lied to that lying to oneself is the new normal.

I am not against a nip or a tuck. It is a woman’s right to to do a little fixin’ when Up North becomes Down South, lol. But I think it is dangerous to value beauty over health. And it is also dangerous to live to impress people who don’t like you for you. It is much easier to ask the Lord to help you place a premium on what you were born with so that becoming something you are not isn’t crucial enough to fix a flat –in your face!! A quick Google of plastic surgery gone wrong will make you fall in love with the way you were made. And if that doesn’t work, just look in the mirror and tell yourself, “I will be me for the rest of my life. And if I don’t change, I will still be alright!”

Well, that will be all. I’m about to go for a walk so I can trim my waistline the old-fashioned way.

CYA!

  1. I’m sorry that the woman had to go through that. You have to do your research. Going the cheap route may not necessarily be the best route. Those injections could have been fatal. From the world’s perspective, a woman should look a certain way and have certain measurements. That is exactly what is it…the world’s perspective. My friend asked me when did a size 10 or 12 become plus size. Really?!? This was news to me. If you feel great petite, wonderful. If you feel great plus size, beautiful. If you want to shed a few pounds for the right reason, so be it. You do you. Now, you have me thinking about Kanye’s mom. She was fine and to me, she didn’t need plastic surgery but…

    • I hear you 1000%. A size 10-14 is the norm. Women are judged on their aesthetics while men can get away with being valued for utilitarian reasons. And because of that, each gender is in a mad dash to go after what people say they should have in order to be acceptable. And what’s acceptable is a very arbitrary thing. As for Kanye’s mom, it was sad what happened to her. Priscilla Presely is another.

  2. From an anthropological and social perspective, it is very interesting to see the way “we” have evolved in recent years. The premium placed on body parts is very disturbing indeed. What happened to being sexy because you were mentally handsome or IQ beautiful?

    • EXACTLY!! Society today has become more visual because of the many ways we have access to media. Also, we have celebrities who are only famous because of how they look, or what they have done with their private parts. Kim Kardashian anyone? Maybe I’m being a little drastic here and introudcing a logical fallacy into this (slippery slope), but pretty soon having character may be outdated en masse. Now isn’t that scary?

  3. The lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life will make a person do some unusual things.

  4. Yes! Dem ah crazy!! In Psalm 139:14, I read that I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Dem ah need to read the Bible. Sometimes, I think women put too much pressure on themselves. I know that there is nothing wrong with a little weight loss; this is good for one’s health. To go to the extreme it is ridiculous; nobody, somebody, or anybody, or whatever deserves you if one have to alter themselves
